How can you stand out from the crowd?<\/p>\n<p>According to online r\u00e9sum\u00e9 service TheLadders.net, job recruiters wade through thousands of profiles and r\u00e9sum\u00e9s with a ruthless eye for clarity and concrete information.<\/p>\n<p>TheLadders tracked the eye movements of 30 professional recruiters performing job candidate screenings over 10 weeks, using a scientific technique to analyze how long and where they focused their attention. The study revealed that recruiters spend an average of only six seconds per individual r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>The study also pointed to how to make every second count. Clearly organized, concisely worded, informational r\u00e9sum\u00e9s were far easier to read. Recruiters found evenly formatted, consistent r\u00e9sum\u00e9s with less data to be more clear.<\/p>\n<p>Eye-tracking analysis showed that recruiters spent 80 percent of their time on a few key pieces of information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Name<\/li>\n<li>Current job title\/company<\/li>\n<li>Previous job title\/company<\/li>\n<li>Previous position start and end dates<\/li>\n<li>Current position start and end dates<\/li>\n<li>Education<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So how do you make the most of your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 and online profile?<\/p>\n<p><b>A Clich\u00e9-Free R\u00e9sum\u00e9<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The first step is self-reflection. What do you really want to do? What are you good at? Answering these questions will drive your job search and strengthen your r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Think of three skills an employer would value. Do you have experience in a particular field or educational credentials already? Write down what you can do well.<\/p>\n<p>Now cut any vague or clich\u00e9d words. Financial advice site WiseBread.com recommends avoiding overusing \u201cI\u201d and \u201cme\u201d in your professional material. Likewise, overcharged words like \u201clove,\u201d \u201cpassionate,\u201d or \u201cdriven\u201d can strike a too-personal tone.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, words like \u201cexperienced\u201d or \u201cresponsible,\u201d can be so vague that they signify nothing. \u201cHard-working,\u201d \u201cteam player,\u201d \u201cdetail-oriented,\u201d or \u201cresults-oriented\u201d are also abstract. \u201cDon\u2019t try to impress by claiming things that employers take for granted in good recruits such as \u2018hard worker\u2019 or \u2018punctual,\u2019\u201d says John Lees, author of the book <i>Knockout CV<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of using weightless words, link your skills to specific results that demonstrate your competence,\u201d recommends networking site LinkedIn.com.<\/p>\n<p>Job site CareerBliss.com advises dumping phrases like \u201cI am seeking a job\/career\/position,\u201d \u201cstrong work ethic,\u201d \u201cwritten communication skills,\u201d \u201chit benchmarks,\u201d and \u201creferences available upon request.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Lees suggests the following structure to your profile:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <b>You: <\/b>Who you are in terms of job experience.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2022 Where: <\/b>What companies have you worked for?<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2022 What: <\/b>What skills and experience are you bringing to the table?<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2022 Next: <\/b>What job and company provide the right next step for you?<\/p>\n<h2>Email etiquette<\/h2>\n<p>Although email has been around for decades, its importance in the workplace only continues to grow. In fact, smartphone technology now makes email preferable to a phone call in many situations because it is convenient, can be done from anywhere via phone, and is less obtrusive than a call or a text.<\/p>\n<p>This convenience also makes embarrassing email mistakes more common, says career coach Barbara Pachter. In <i>The Essentials of Business Etiquette, <\/i>Ms.Pachter<i> <\/i>lays out some ground rules for good email habits:<\/p>\n<p><b>1\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>Use a professional email address.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Use your company email address for work-related emails. If you ever have to use a non-work email address, make sure the address conveys your name, so the recipient knows who you are. Never use an email address that is inappropriate for work (like cutegirl84@&#8230;).<\/p>\n<p><b>2\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>Make your subject line clear\u00a0<\/b><b>and direct.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople often decide whether to open an email based on the subject line,\u201d<br \/>\nMs. Pachter notes. \u201cChoose one that lets readers know you are addressing their concerns or business issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>3<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><b> <\/b><b>Refrain from automatically hitting \u201creply all.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Not every email needs to go to the entire team, even if the initial message was sent that way. Consider who really needs to be copied on your response.<\/p>\n<p><b>4<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>But always reply to your emails.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Be brief, even if only to acknowledge that the message was received.<\/p>\n<p><b>5<\/b><b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><b>Mind your tone.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Be aware that humor can be misinterpreted, and that people from different cultures communicate differently. What is funny or self-explanatory to one person might be interpreted as offensive or unclear to someone else. And use exclamation points sparingly. Too many can appear \u201ctoo emotional or immature,\u201d<br \/>\nMs. Pachter says.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Ms. Pachter recommends proofreading your message before sending it, including the subject line.
